Deserted Island
You are shipwrecked on a deserted, uncharted island with no chance of being rescued. In order to survive, you and your classmates must work together to make decisions about how to organize the community. To do this, you must make a rulebook for the community. This document must be approved and signed by all members of the class.

A question to ponder... Can people be trusted to govern themselves?

Part A: Write a paragraph response to the following prompt: List at least three types of rules you would want to establish if you were stranded on a desert island with members of this class.

 

Part B: Forming a Government

Materials Needed: None

Directions: You will be placed in a group with 2-3 other students. Create a rulebook and one corresponding presentation for the class. Every member of the group must have a rulebook in his/her note book. 

 

The contents of the rulebook must include:

a name for your island and a corresponding flag

bullet

Who in the class will perform the following duties:
bullet

hunting and gathering food

bullet

cooking food

bullet

making shelter

bullet

exploring the rest of the island

bullet

fishing for food

bullet

caring for the ill

bullet

How your community will determine if someone is guilty of breaking rules

bullet

What, if any, will be punishment for those who do not obey rules

bullet

Any other rules you wish to have for your community

bullet

How you will make additional rules in the future and who will make them

 

The group may decide to make one clean copy and reproduce enough copies for the entire group. Remember, each member must have a copy of the Rulebook in his/her notebook.

Presentation: Each group will present the Rulebook to the class. The class will decide which rulebook will be used to govern the inhabitants of the desert island.

 

Part C: Debriefing

The debriefing questions will be provided by the teacher.

Directions: Create a full one pager for the artist assigned to you. Each One Pager will include:
